2. Hire a car! Our public transport will not be good until 2020. If you can not Santa Monica is the place to stay but it is a bit expensive.
3. If you follow advice from my point #2 you can have a choice of many beach communities to stay in at many different price points.

I always sit on the right hand side when flying up on Air New Zealand and the views can be amazing comong from the south.
Funny........as we were flying over Compton into LAX and a German guy asked me how come no one had swimming pools. I just laughed and said 'look closer and you might be able to see an armed robbery taking place'.
My fav flight has to be that all day LHR LAX flight. The scenery is truely superb
Seriously, I actually like LA better than San Fran since i have loads of family there and the weather is so much better
