Does "3" work in Beijing or will I need to go with another company? (From reading the prior 6 pages, looks like it won't, but I just want to make sure).
Yes, recharging are pretty straight forward, you get a recharge card from convenient store or go to their website to do it online.

The roaming version of "3" card works in beijing, just cost way more. Your best bet is to get a China local SIM from china mobile (2g) or china unicom (wcdma 3G). Alternatively you can get a one card dual number service with Peoples (also known as China Mobile HK)
