Normally you fly in just south of the downtown area, towards the coastline. So take a seat on the right hand side (ie not A side). But the approach can vary.

You should get a view of the downtown area a few minutes before landing. The same side on take off often gives you a good view of the coast at Santa Monica and the pier. The most impressive thing really is the scale of the city, it seems to spread forever.
