For whatever reason, CX only does seat assignments 6 months out. This appears to be for everyone, even CX elites, so you should not be disadvantaged by this, so long as you remember to call (either AA or CX) at the 6 month point.

Btw, on the 747-400, 1A and 1K are, by far, the best seats for couples, but, still, it is not super easy to have a conversation. You can dine together, though.
