I got their response to my complaint and I'm not surprised.
This might as well be "Send him the 'Roaches' letter."

Thank you for contacting American Airlines Customer Relations. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
I am sorry that you were disappointed that it was necessary to gate check your baggage when you traveled with us on American Eagle. Effective May 12, 2008, on American Eagle flights, all carry-on bags (roller board bags, duffle bags, large backpacks, etc.) must be valet checked at the gate and placed in the cargo compartment. A personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, laptop computer and case, camera and case, small tote bag, shoulder bag, small backpack, book bag, pilot navigational bag, or other personal item of similar size will be allowed in the cabin.
While I appreciate the importance of both items to you, our field personnel are in the best position to determine if an item can fit in the cabin, or if it should be valet checked.
I am sorry, too, that the manner of "enforcement" was less than courteous. Our gate agents have been given strict instructions to diligently monitor the boarding process as it relates to carry-on items so that we remain in complete compliance with FAA mandates. They are balancing this particular duty (and others) with their dedication to ensure an on time departure. However, from the details you provided, it appears as if our agent's commitment in doing so came across without the level of professionalism that we both would have preferred. I am sorry.
We will continue our efforts to ensure that your overall travel experiences with us are the best that they can be. Your feedback will help us do just that.
