Generic SPG Hotel Smell

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this:

In the past two months I've stayed in an Element, Aloft, and Sheraton hotel that all have had this particular smell. I am not even sure how to describe it. I'm reminded of an episode of Seinfeld where Kramer comes up with a cologne that smells like a beach, the hotels all smell as if a cologne has been lightly sprayed around that smells sort of like a pool... Some people really enjoy the smell as I've seen comments on tripadvisor talking about the particular smell of the hotel. I don't seem to find it as refreshing as these people though.

At first I thought they were pumping it through the air conditioning, but then on closer inspection at each of the hotels there are these small boxes with fans on them that seem to turn on after someone has walked passed them. I was wondering if these units with small fans that pump out the generic smell serve some purpose, they kind of look like an ozone machine.
