He rented a GSM loaner from them for I think $10 and had roaming of $1.99/min incoming and ouTgoing. If its only for true emergency then it wouldnt amount to much.
From what I was told by an in-store Verizon rep, Verizon will provide you with a GSM phone during your trip for no additional cost for the phone. Obviously, you have to be willing to accept those steep fees for roaming. Maybe the $10 was a handling or shipping fee?
I believe that Google Voice can be configured to provide voice-mail even for calls into your regular Verizon number. Or maybe that's just a feature of GV for Android. I love GV's voice-mail notification and transcript delivered by email.
