To the OP if you are planning to only be in Sydney for two nights then I would recommend the Menzies for convenience, safety and price. You can get the Menzies for around AUD150 at the moment. In the CBD you can take the CBD Shuttle for free and then its only a short walk to Circular Quay and Opera House.
Agree the Menzies location is unbeatable and it's often on sale or doing free-night deals on Expedia; but it is a threadbare, aging property much in need of renovation (don't let the lobby fool you, it's the best part of the hotel) and not the place to take a girlfriend who must be impressed. Spent four or five nights at The Menzies last year with my son and would not willingly return; our room was more like a college dorm. I find it hard to believe it was "too expensive" as much of the observed trade was air crews or coach tours on deep discounts and we ourselves were paying only about US$75/night. You get what you pay for. I agree the Rydges World Square is a better bet.
