Not familiar with Vz, and not sure what plans you have for a cellphone? Is it for local calls or calling home?

In general international roaming is costly [calling home], at least $1.50 per minute. If you have any plans that require more than just an occasional call home, use skype or a prepaid calling card.

If you want to use for local calls, your best bet is to get unlocked gsm phone and a local sim prepaid card. There is a sticky thread re european sim cards, also consult prepaidgsm.net for more details.

eBay is littered with good quadband unlocked phones....no need for a smart phone, any Nokia or similar brand is enough and can be had for less than $30.
