Not all low-fare carriers require old aircraft in order to succeed.

JetBlue has an all A-320 fleet and Midway Airlines flies F-100s, CRJs, and 737-700s. Even AirTran is replacing their DC-9s with B-717s.

I think newer aircraft pays off in the long run with the savings gained in fuel and maintenance costs.
