I also have Verizon but I use the Moto Z6C World edition. This is a Verizon phone with a SIM card so it works on CDMA and GSM (900/1800). This allows the phone to work most anywhere, except South America and Central America where it may not work depending on country.
The good part is that id you are a Verizon customer they will unlock the SIM so you can use any local SIM card. This is what I do, I just insert a TIM sim card in my phone and off I go. This is significantly less expensive then using the Verizon SIM card. The downside is that you no longer have your local number (I view this as a upside), I update my voice mail with my country location and that I will get back to them.
Of course you could search eBay and get anyone of the hundreds of unlocked GSM phones you find there. This would not be a bad option because you could get a GSM Quad band phone this way. Currently there are thousands of these phones listed on ebay for all price points. If you get one not listed for US you may also get all the plugs necessary to use it anywhere.
