After you log in to EF, click on Awards & Upgrades on the left. Enter your cities, date, select AA as the airline, and for booking class you want "Business - Upgrade (C)." If there are any seats available in the C bucket then the upgrade is available. If it shows C 0 then it isn't.
Thanks. I am sorry that I was not clear. I do know how to look for the current availability or lack thereof. I was talking about the situation where seats are currently not released, you look at the alphanumeric soup, F2 J7 Y4 Q0 etc., and figure out the likelihood of future release. That's the art I haven't mastered.
