Each card costs 2500 krw + you need to fill the amount you want to spend.
You can refill your card as you go, and it does not seem to expire (so you can use it on your next trip).
Also you may find this card useful- many (if not all) cabs, buses/subways in a number of suburb cities, trains to/from ICN, and even some pay phones accept it.

But you might want to make it sure to scan your card when getting BOTH onboard and offboard. I thought I need to scan my card on my way out only if I need a transfer ride, but it turns out that more money was deducted afterwards if I don't (probably additional 500 krw). Maybe some sort of time counting involved?

I think I will give the T-money card a try as I read it can be used beyond transportation including convenience stores and entrance fees for some Seoul sights like palaces and museums. The bonus of being able to refund any unused balance, minus a rather small 500 won fee, is also a big bonus in case I load too much and don't use it up. I'll look for one when I land at ICN. ^
