The secret to the QX overhead bins is the thickness/profile of your luggage. I have a rather large REI backpack that everyone assumes will never fit; however it has a rather slim profile and has fit in the overhead bin of every small regional I've been in including some really small birds in Central America. If it doesn't fit, QX has Ala Cart service where you can leave it and claim it plane-side; it is VERY quick and convenient generally.
