GREATLY appreciate it any help! Thanks everyone!
I was in much the same situation. After first adding a few segments to a trip, I decided to work things a bit harder since adding segments didn't seem like the best way.
For me, I found that really lengthening a business trip and leveraging the PIT/STL/RDU/BNA double-MQM + RDM-bonus was the best way to do it.
My latest trip (in progress) was MSY-LAS-MSP. I did the following:
* MSY-ATL-PIT, booked with ~12500 Amex MR points so they earn Delta MQM/MQS.
* PIT-ATL-LAS(destination)-LAX-IND-CVG-PIT, RT that cost about $50 more than my baseline MSY-LAS-MSP trip. This earned a lot more segments but the PIT bonus is what really bumped things up a LOT due to double MQM.
* PIT-DTW-MKE-MSP, booked with ~12500 Amex MR points so they earn Delta MQM/MQS.
My point in this example is that my baseline trip of MSY-LAS-MSP would have earned 3550 MQM, 3 MQS, and 3550 RDM. By giving up a Sunday, 25k Amex MR, ~$50, and a good chunk of Thu afternoon/Friday morning, I instead received 13700 MQM, 11 MQS, and 18113 RDM
If I'd had a bit more cash to spend on travel, I'd have rather kept the Amex MR points. So, how...
1. Be aware of this thread about the double MQM/bonus RDM offer from PIT/STL/RDU/BNA. If you're east cost based, PIT may be quite easy.

2. Earlier this summer, I laid out how I find long multi-segment routes and book them on delta.com.

I agree though maximizing domestic miles also added quite a few segments for me. I'll end up crossing into FO with 29 segments. Prior to this trip though, my average mqm/segment was ~600.
Good luck!
