I have refunded full-fares several times (in fact, I think I do it about 2 times a month on average) and the refund usually shows up on my credit-card statement (online) within 3 days after I call. Although, I have a refund pending for a small amount (charged 2 times for same ticket and am attempting to dispute it with AA) since mid-Feb and am still waiting for it to show up.
