Revenue management did a similar thing on me when my father died. I already had standard award seating for a later date my family but needed to change the date so they could attend the funeral, and RM denied accommodating the 2 of them with their existing standard awards on the new dates and had to double up on the miles to fly them on a plane that had plenty of empty seats. I also got a sense from the EXP agent that my large balance had something to do with RM denying opening up standard award inventory.
Having said this, standard award seats were not available in the first place so I never ever thought of complaining about something I have no basis to complain about; however I did make a mental note that unlike the past AA corporate no longer does favors when most in need (specifically no incremental cost favors, since it was off-peak, the flight was not even close to full, and I asked < 24 hours), making loyalty to them ever less valuable. ANY airline would have flown my family for DOUBLE mileage, top tier elite or bottom of the barrel infrequent flyer.
