Thank you for all the great information so far. I can definitely use some of those airlines.

I don't think I can use the "frequent flyer" route for upgrades very much. My wife and I presently only have about 100,000 miles each on Delta and 50,000 miles each on United. Mileage on other airlines is negligible.

Even though we take a few long flights a year they don't amount to much in the frequent flyer world.

Contrary to what I stated in the initial post, in some circumstances I would be willing to pay closer to $1,000. The key is that I'm able to confirm the seat when I book the flight and not wait until check-in.

I appreciate all recommendations and I'm hoping for more.
