Yes, try that. But also do what I mentioned and get to the airport extra early for check-in to HKT. I think one of the reasons for success is when there are few other passengers standing around in line, they can make an unofficial exception for you without opening the floodgates. Also, it helps to dress nice--I know, seems silly when heading for Phuket--but that counts for a lot with the TG check-in agents if you seem to be upscale. Dress to look like a golf pro (khakis and polo shirt) not like a surfer dude (shorts).
