With one exception, I've always been able to get free toothpaste at Marriott hotels - and believe me, I forget it often. In cases where I go to the sundry area and try to buy a toothpaste, they always give me a free one instead. This has caused me to wonder why they bother to carry the toothpaste for a fee, but maybe they only give it for free to status guests - who knows.
Anyway, the one exception is the New York Marriott Downtown. I went down to the front desk to get some toothpaste there and was charged $3.29 for a miniature tube of toothpaste. Despite the fact that my employers was paying for it, I was perturbed by being charged $3.29 for mini toothpaste after spending $399 for a single night there. Call me petty, but I have yet to return to that hotel.
So other than that, I've always been given either mini tubes or the little Colgate packets at the front desk whenever I've forgotten. I've also gotten free toothpaste packets (again, the Colgate ones) at many Starwood properties.
