Calling the EXP desk is actually quicker because it can be done while the plane is still taxiing in. I've done this several times and they've been able to contact the connecting gate before we even reached the terminal. Thus, when we deplaned, I didn't have to find any personnel...we could just go to the other gate, knowing that they knew that we were on the way.
