I know this is "Travel and the Single Guy", but I would like to contribute if that is OK.
My husband and I met about 20 years ago - we both worked travel related (I worked IT for an airline, he in transportation) but we were poor... we traveled by car A LOT at first... Pre-GPS getting lost on back roads was an adventure. He could not read a map to save his life; I preferred to be the Navigator than Capt....
Other times he would work on a Saturday and drop me at the airport for a trip to NYC or SFO and pick me up 10 hours later - no hotel - just a guidebook and enough in a backpack in case I got stuck! The glamour days of NRSA!
Fast forward, change of careers for him, change of venue for us - now we travel a lot, my work (he tags along when possible) and to celebrate just about anything (HEY, I didn't gain any weight this week! Let’s do FLL!!!!)
Last year I made 1K for the first time... and to do it had to do a mileage run to have a beer in the RDU airport and come back on a Saturday - while he went to work! Just like old times!
So back on-topic "How has your affection for travel (and/or your career) factored into your relationships?" - It became one with the relationship... whether it was the Great Wall, Provence, Italy, Paris, London, Canada (thanks for letting us get married!), or any of the "let’s get away" trips, travel is integral to how we exist together
