to over simplify....the costs to reach cruising altitude & to descend from cruising altitude are about the same for long and short flights. then its the difference in cruising mi's that makes a long one cost more..

to get to cruising altitude you have the res,ground taxi etc [the long would have a bit more weight for fuel]
