The 'threat' isn't directed their way, and if it was, the only recourse they have is to use local law enforcement.
To make it simpler. You are stopped in the US by police / sheriff / trooper and you think it funny to ask "are you looking for the bomb in my trunk" ( pun on luggage ) ...I'd suggest you would probably end up on your ar5e, with a gun pointing at your head.
The stress on a screener is probably raised as they aren't so empowered.
