There is little to no chance you'll have the full 3 hrs - and factor in you should be on board the DEL flight a good 45 mins before departure (especially if you're in BF), you're really only working with 2hrs at best minus delays. A really bad delay and you'll be lucky to make the connection at all.
My advise - have your friends check your SFO-EWR flight status, and if it looks like an on-time arrival, buy refundable tickets (domestic), OLCI, print BPs, cancel/refund the flights (don't tie up inventory) and meet you at the gate - then you can eat inside the terminal and you can relax until boarding. If your flight is delayed, they can skip the trip to the airport.
