I think you also have to look at this from the point of view of the security people, who are working in a very stressful environment. If the DFT inspectors do an undercover test and something slips past security then those people (I understand) lose their jobs. Therefore if you make comments about having something dangerous in your luggage, you are probably just adding to the stress levels. If I was security and a passenger who went on to cause harm to or onboard a flight went through my section and I didn't spot the equipment he was taking I don't think I'd be able to live with myself.
If they are that stressed out about non-fighting words, then perhaps shouldn't they surrender their post or get some help with stress management? Instead of worrying about non-fighting words, the airport security staff should stick to focusing on searches for weapons, bombs, incendiaries and components to such.
