I did this exact same time this month for a trip in December. I did it all online, and when I requested the upgrade, myself and my companion were instantly upgraded.
While shopping for the tickets, I used the website, and using the online code. Booked the tickets, (for myself and companion), and then once the tickets were issued, requested the upgrade online. Result was that we were both upgraded to F.
It worked exactly as it should have.
Thanks for the tip - I wasn't sure if the companion upgrade had a special fare bucket assigned to it that would prevent instant upgrades...your experience definitely clarifies things!
