Well, maybe. Acknowledged that there are many terrible employers.
Having said that, though, it's also quite possible that a RT ticket is
substantially cheaper than a one-way. There may be other considerations, too, depending on whether the company is paying from overhead vs billing a client. And in some cases the decision may be driven by risk management folks.....
And that's not even getting into whether said employee has appropriate clothes with him/her for a business meeting, or whether employee has the appropriate tools & information (yeah, it can be shipped, but....)
I've worked for an employer that it would have been no problem (ended up going NCE-LHR for a day meeting one time while I was on holiday), and I've worked for an employer that would throw fits over the money (how could you spend so much on a one way segment! Don't ever do it again! on a trip where they brought me up on the corporate jet with them but I had to make my own way home).
