In the good old days of I-94Ws, if you were only leaving the US for a short period, you weren't supposed to surrender them and didn't have to fill out a new one when returning to the US. Happened to me a couple of times, when I was in the US, hopped up to Canada for a couple days, then back into the US. Don't know how that works now that I-94Ws have gone.
