Qantas uses an A380 for SYD-LAX. The A380 is (supposedly) a really comfortable plane. Qantas is a 4 star airline as ranked by Skytrax. Most people would probably say you should NOT FLY ON DELTA AIR LINES. Sometimes channel 9 works on United, so if you want to hear ATC communications, your best bet is UA. However, people always seem to have problems with rude UA employees be they FA's, GA's, Dragon Lounges, etc. LAX's Internation Terminal seems to have many negative reviews given by Flyertalkers, so you might want to fly SYD-SFO-LAX, or SYD-YVR-LAX to avoid the internation terminal. Their Terminal 2 (where AC flights from Canada arrive) is okay but can be crowded sometimes.
I find UA crews generally to be great. OK, I usually fly C and I am a 1K. But even when my upgrade to NRT didn't clear last May and I was in Y, had a great crew with excellent service IAD-NRT. If you can get E+ (by buying up to it if you have no status), it is likely worth it and would make a world of difference.
If love is in the air, you could probably even survive Delta.
