One of the things Slater mentioned was how glad he was that the a/c would be taken out of service as a result of the slide deployment. How long does it take for the slide to be replaced and the aircraft put back into service?
JFK being a maintenance base for the airline, they undoubtedly had some slides in inventory. Figure 30 minutes to fetch a new one and install it, an hour tops. The deployed one gets re-packed and re-certified, and goes back into inventory for use when needed.
