I've personally ignored the instructions because if I'm routed through the WTMD nothing happens (of course) and if I'm sent to the WBI I opt-out and hold my wallet/pass (or put in a tray in the penalty box) while they do the patdown.
If an ambitious FTer ever starts a TSA screening FAQ this should be one of the top survival tips. ^^^
