Thanks to everyone for their opinions. It will be a tough decision.

Time is not so crucial, but the extra flight time with CX does push me towards JAL a little further. Also, on JAL, the 90K award can include a flight to Asia Zone 1, and while I am dying to check out Hong Kong and the Wing, the JAL award would give me a choice of extra destinations.

Does anyone know- will more of JAL's planes be fitted with the new J seats by the time I'd be flying? I worry that I'll get to the flight and they will have substituted in a plane with the older J. The less chance of that the better.

To whoever asked in their post (sorry, I forgot who)- yes, this is a standard award. Seems a much better deal than the 50K upgrade.
