I think I was on a flight once (maybe Airtran ATL-PHL) and they boarded back 5 rows, then front 5, then more in the back then more in the front until they met in the middle. That need seem efficient, however it was also during the liquid limitation timeframe when everything boarded quickly as there was no carry luggage for the most part.
