The one time I was dumb enough to let myself be WTMD'd, I left some paper business cards in my breast pocket. They saw them on the scan-screen and got mad at me. So, yes, they do demand that your hands and pockets are empty, and, yes indeed, you are at higher risk for theft of passport, credit cards, cash, jewelry, etc., from other passengers or TSOs themselves.
