By train, 1h to Lugano and 3:41h to Zürich. Btw it is the same train...
The options are to go by surface transporation to Lugano, perhaps stop there one night, and then the next day by surface transportation to Zurich.

Alternatively, we would arrive on the night of Oct 15 night in Lugano, and fly to Canada from Lugano via Zurich on Oct 17.
