If the traveller has already used the outbound and one wants to change the inbound/ return leg (due to uncertainity of return travel date), one can cancel the return leg - and note/ record the TICKET NUMBER, (not the PNR number).

When the Traveller's return date is known/ finalized - one must call into the Delta Customer Service and give them the ORIGINAL Ticket number so that DL CS can locate that ticket itinerary, then give them the exact travel date for the return leg ... pay the Change Fee of $250 for International ticket, and difference (if any) in AirFare from original itinerary to new itinerary.
If one does this in advance one can get virtually no difference in airfares and the only cost will be the Change Fees of $250/-
DL CS will reissue the ticket and make a reservation for the return leg with a new PNR number.
Check with DL CS if this has changed.
The KEY is to note down/ write down/ save somewhere the ORIGINAL TICKET NUMBER.
