The OP didn't mention anything about an award ticket. There's no need to mail a revenue ticket back.

The ticket cannot be used directly on another train. But it can be exchanged at any staffed station at full face value and applied towards another ticket (on any route or train) until the end of the original ticket validity, which, as the agent said, may be for a full year. The last date the ticket is valid is printed towards the top middle of the long portion of the ticket. Hope this helps, pfieldston, and welcome to FT! ^
