Did you notify the GA that you were in F? It's hard for me to believe that a GA would deny boarding to an F pax over small carryons, but I suppose nothing at UA or the airline industry these days surprises me.

This morning on our IAD-DEN flight, the FAs were really enforcing the gate check policy. However, they offered F pax the option to stow extra bags in the forward closet.
