I agree. It's really hard to see virtually any domestic travellers lucking into a HSJ status upgrade without specifically aiming for the promo. I suppose if you happened to be travelling to PBG, BLT or MLB and also are a shuttle flyer, it could happen. That seems to be a negligible number.
I bet there are some very frequent fliers who won't even qualify, notwithstanding transcon flights. If you're east coast based with lots of flights to Europe, that's not going to get it done, even if you also are a shuttle flyer. You'd need a trip to the west mixed in there, and if you weren't trying for it specifically, it might not happen. Whereas, the guy who takes his family from the western part of the U.S. to NY for a weekend and then down to Nassau or something, might luck into status for his entire family.
It's a weird promo.
