I think the quote you have for 42,000 miles for an one-way upgrade DXB-BKK is to do with the class of your ticket. If you look at your ticket you might find that this leg will be a classed as a saver fare, thus incurring more mileage for upgrade.
Some of the tickets that I have booked lately have been mixed Flex and Saver fares. I always book on schedule alone not really caring which fare I have.
If you have a mixed ticket then upgrade the flex parts, which will cost you less mileage. It just might not be the legs that you want to upgrade.
There might be more availability for upgrading nearer to the depature dates.
