Unless the visa requirements/prices have changed it is $43USD for a Visa for Canadians & it is easily done at the border. I forget if a photo is required or not, but it would be good to bring one just in case.

I might suggest flying, if the space is available. Discovery Airpass is issued on the ticket stock of the first carrier of your itinerary. I've bought then from Bangkok Airways & from Laos Airways.
