I wouldn't check a laptop. In fact, I wouldn't check anything I wasn't fully prepared to never see again. I've had an entire suitcase and it's contents "disappear" never to be found again.

I pretty much stopped checking bags at all after that.

As an aside, i will say the experience also made me question what my "valuables" really are....and aren't.
