When I check baggage at LHR is it possible to for it to be interlined to NZ at AKL. Obviously I have to clear customs etc at AKL but can I then drop bags at desk after that or do I have trundle it along to the domestic terminal and recheck it with NZ?

Yes you can have your baggage through checked to CHC, since you are transferring to NZ you can also check-in at the international terminal. (clear customs in AKL)
