$1500 - Not next to one another, but one seat apart.

Ex: In a 757 will the empty seat B or E between two elite pax in coach seats A&C or D&F remain unnasigned "longer" than if only one of the pax is elite?

I wondered about this myself and couldn't figure out the answer. If the gate agent is "on the ball" it seems that he/she wouldn't assign an empty seat btwn two elites until absolutely necessary but what about seats assigned automatically? How does the system determine the best next available seat?
