Wow, thanks for the on-the-spot reporting!

Serious mechanical issues can and have forced many airlines to land in inhospitable places in Canada. But it's up to the airline to offer the locals anything to do their best for the passengers. Maybe AF held back in this regard?

Zokson can you tell us which class you were in? Economy? Business?
