This is so true. I even chat with UA people about how I figure that being nice and helping out (like getting out of the way so they can check in someone to the RCC while still working on your reservation/accommodation or proposing alternate flight routings that might not come to mind immediately) get a lot more positive a response than screaming and yelling. I save my ranting for FT and for the customer service folk. The on airport people are under plenty of stress already and don't need us adding to it.

If it is your origin airport, sure, because they figure you can go home. If it is your destination airport and you are boarding your onward/return flight, they will take care of you. I've gotten car service in lieu of a hotel when it simply made more sense to head back to my girlfriend's house than stay in an airport hotel.

Does anyone have recent experiences with this?
Yes they do. I got both a hotel (choice of Lansdowne and Hyatt Dulles, took Hyatt because it is much closer to the airport and actually has nicer rooms) and a $15 voucher (covered all by $4 of the overpriced, but tasty breakfast buffet) along with amazing rebooking help during a recent mis-connect at IAD.
