Many (including my legal sized carry-on) do not fit lengthwise on Airbus's but fit just fine on Boeing's. One of the many annoying things to me about buying from the Euro's!

I agree it is a waste of time to contact UA about the passenger unless you know they are employees for certain and/or they had crew tags on your bag. I would actually assume they were not because the FA helped you and not her which is the opposite of what would normally happen as they look out for each other. A letter of compliment for the FA that helped you would be great and I would have given him/her an GTEM certificate. It is infuriating when people reposition bags. I will get up and reposition it back. Just be glad you were in Row 1 of a CRJ!! I personally have given up on the standard roller-boards and moved to a small duffle and have had many fewer issues since!
