I agree with some previous posters, in which the feeling is that we should use some due diligence before using the iron. Just the same, the hotel has some responsibility to do a quality control check on everything in the rooom before it is sold.

If I were the OP I would at least let the hotel know, then see what they say. I would not push it, but would at least give the hotel some chance to respond.
