You can request the upgrade by calling CO.

If one is available they will take 20,000 miles from each of you each way and a $$ copay that varies by class of ticket.

If the UG is not presently available, ask to be waitlisted.

I have only done MAD-EWR return one way, but both myself and dergon_gf were able to score UGs for it. Good luck!
